Having had to wear the ‘strap you in tight’ type of bras for 6 months I promised myself that once my reconstruction was complete I would treat myself to some fabulous new bras. So I took myself off to a well-known underwear boutique where I was dazzled by the array of beautiful bras. I have to be honest I don’t normally spend this sort of money on bras but on this occasion I thought my magnificent new breast deserved something really special. My surgeon also advised me to get properly measured after my reconstruction to make sure I was wearing the right size.
Did you know that research reveals that 90% of British women are wearing the wrong sized bra!
50% of the women surveyed hadn’t been measured for a bra for over 5 years.
I hold my hand up as I certainly fell into that group prior to my diagnosis. Only 10% of women measured themselves to the correct size versus a professional bra fitter. 11% were just one size out but a massive 79% were wearing both the wrong band and cup size. Wearing the wrong bra size can affect your health, aching ribs, shoulder and neck aches, headaches and even blocked lymph nodes in more serious cases so it is particularly important following breast cancer reconstruction to ensure your reconstruction is properly supported.
Beautiful underwear makes us all feel good not just because it looks lovely but if it’s a good fit then we a comfortable throughout the day. So go on treat yourself, you deserve it and it’s the right thing to do!
